Gelli Prints and Linocut Workshops with Artist-in-Residence, Trudy Rice

Sandringham Primary School was fortunate to host Trudy Rice as an artist-in-residence during Term Two.

During this time, Trudy worked with small groups of our Sandringham Primary School students in printmaking workshops.

Students learnt the art of Gel Plate (gelli) printing, creating the most amazing and unique monoprints. One of the best things about gel plate printing is how easy it is to achieve complex-looking effects, simply by working in layers!

Trudy also conducted a Linocut Concertina Book workshop for students.

Linocut printing is a form of fine art printmaking where the printing plate is made from linoleum. Students designed four individual drawings that they then drew onto four pieces of lino. The next step was to carve out the drawn areas very carefully with various carving tools. Lastly, each lino block was inked up, registered and printed using black ink.

Based in Melbourne, Australia, artist Trudy Rice was formally trained in Visual Art and Contemporary Craft, where she found a love of Printmaking. Trudy conveys the colours and delights of nature in her artwork and particularly invokes her love of gardens and the birdlife they attract with a focus on environmental protection.
