New Sensory Garden Beds

Last week, we held a special assembly and welcomed MP Zoe Daniel, Federal Member for Goldstein – along with Eddie Lichtig from the Woolworths group and Woolworths Highett Store Manager, Julius Torkkola – to Sandringham Primary School.  Zoe presented our Environment and Sustainability Student Action Leadership Team (SALT) with a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant.

The grant will be used to buy two garden beds to create a sensory garden that will be full of interesting plants to smell, feel and occasionally taste, with an aim to provide a quiet space for students to engage in a space with nature. This project will be led by our Kitchen Garden Specialist, Mrs Louise Murray, and the plan is to include plants such as mints, basil, thyme, lavenders, fennel and some lambs ears.

The Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants program provides funds for Australian primary schools and early learning centres to build and develop hands-on environmental learning projects.  From sustainable food production to enhancing native habitats, the program is all about supporting fun and engaging learning experiences that can help younger generations get hands-on and connect with natural environments.  Since 2018, Woolworths has partnered with Landcare Australia to help support over 5,900 school groups with more than $6 million in funding, helping kids all across the country to get hands-on with nature.

We are grateful to the Woolworths Landcare grant program for their assistance in making this project possible for Sandy Primary.
